Elon Musk Announces New Remote Control “Smart Summon” Feature on Tesla Vehicles

Tesla CEO Elon Musk continues to innovate his vehicle line, holding true to his promise of major improvements over the past few weeks, mostly to the Autopilot Summon feature.  Indeed, he has just announced a new update will be arriving—probably within the window of six weeks—which will enable Tesla owners to remotely control their car through an app on their phones.

Yes, it will be just like an RC car; except it’s not a toy.

Since Tesla first introduced its second-generation Autopilot hardware, they have been also been promising to release a new feature under its “Enhanced Autopilot” package; a package the automaker has been selling for $5,000.  One of the most popular features, of course, is the self-parking “Summon” feature, which not only allows you park hands-free but also gives you the freedom to adjust your car forward and backward—using the app—to help fit into a, more complicated space.  This upgrade, then, is among the newest features which Tesla has been hinting this could be something called “Smart Summon.”

In fact, the long game in this already ambitious vision is a program in which your Tesla will drop you off, find a parking spot, park itself, and then come back and pick you up when you are ready to go!

Rolling out these new features have taken a bit longer than expected, now delayed two years.  The company continues to persevere, however, to push out as many as possible.  As such, Musk has promised that the Advanced Summon feature will, in fact, allow Tesla owners to “drive to your phone location and follow you like a pet if you hold down summon button on the Tesla app.”

This new feature, in the form of an over-the-air software update to the existing Summon program, will only be compatible with Tesla models made in the past two years.  This is important because the existing Summon feature had originally been only available on the Tesla Model 3, Model S, and Model X vehicles.

In a world where self-parking and autonomous vehicles are advancing quickly, this appears to be one unique way in which Tesla can retain its dedicated fan base.
