FDA Issues Dog Food Recall Over Vitamin D Concerns

The United States Food and Drug Administration announced, at the end of the week, a recall of dog food over concerns they might contain too much Vitamin D.  As such, ANF Pet, Inc, ELM Pet Foods and Sunshine Mills brands have all issued voluntary recalls.

The bags of affected dog food were sold in retail stores across the United States and have best buy dates from November 1, 2018, to November 8, 2019. These bags can include:

  • Sunshine Brands 14-lb Evolve Chicken & Rice Puppy Dry Dog Food Bag
  • Sunshine Brands 28-lb Evolve Chicken & Rice Puppy Dry Dog Food Bag
  • Sunshine Brands 40-lb Sportsman’s Pride Large Breed Puppy Dry Dog Food Bag
  • Sunshine Brands 3.5-lb Triumph Chicken & Rice Recipe Dry Dog Food Bag
  • Sunshine Brands 16-lb Triumph Chicken & Rice Recipe Dry Dog Food Bag
  • Sunshine Brands 30-lb Triumph Chicken & Rice Recipe Dry Dog Food Bag
  • ELM Pet Foods 3-lb ELM Chicken and Chickpea Recipe
  • ELM Pet Foods 28-lb ELM Chicken and Chickpea Recipe
  • ELM Pet Foods 40-lb ELM K9 Naturals Chicken Recipe
  • ANF Pet Inc 3-kg ANF Lamb and Rice Dry Dog Food
  • ANF Pet Inc 7.5-kg ANF Lamb and Rice Dry Dog Food

It should also be noted that Nutrisca and Natural Life Pet Products both issued voluntary recalls, earlier in November, over similar concerns. Nutrisca’s recall includes the following:

  • Nutrisca 4-lb Chicken & Chickpea Dry Dog Food (UPC 8-84244-12495-7)
  • Nutrisca 15-lb Chicken & Chickpea Dry Dog Food (UPC 8-84244-12795-8)
  • Nutrisca 28-lb Chicken & Chickpea Dry Dog Food (UPC 8-84244-12895-5)

Natural Life Pet Products’ recall includes only one item and is only through eight states.  The recall includes the 17.5-lb Natural Life Chicken & Potato Dry Dog Food Bag in the following states:  Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.

This is a special type of recall, of course, as most issues like this are over contamination concerns.  But too much Vitamin D is actually very dangerous for dogs because it can lead to kidney failure.  Symptoms of this can include:

  • Vomiting
  • Excess drool
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Increased thirst
  • Increased urination
