Amazon Plans To Open A Fulfilment Center In Greater Cincinnati

Online retail giant Amazon has disclosed that it is putting up a new fulfilment center consisting of one million square feet of space in Monroe, Ohio. IDI Gazeley has been picked to develop the facility that will serve as a center for packing and shipping items such as pet food, gardening tools and sports equipment.

Sanjay Shah, the North America Customer Fulfilment vice president at Amazon said Monroe was picked due to the available workforce and the support the retailer has received from the local leaders. Approximately 1,000 jobs are expected to be created at the fulfilment center by Amazon. Ten-year tax credits valued at $3.8 million were approved for Amazon last month by the Ohio Tax Credit Authority. Amazon has made a commitment of keeping its operations going at Monroe for a minimum of 13 years.

Ohio Development Services Agency

Documents obtained from Ohio Development Services Agency showed that a couple of other states located in the Midwest were competing to host the fulfilment center.

“We welcome Amazon’s commitment to bring 1,000 new jobs to Monroe and its growth in Southwest Ohio. Amazon is a terrific partner of Ohio, and we look forward to working with the company…” John Minor the chief investment officer and president of JobsOhio said in a statement.

Currently Amazon employs about 6,000 people in Ohio. The Seattle, Washington-based online retail giant also operates other fulfilment centers located in Obetz and Etna. There is also another fulfilment center planned for North Randall.

North Portland fulfilment center

The announcement of a new Amazon fulfilment center in the state of Ohio also coincides with Amazon’s plans to launch three fulfilment centers in the state of Oregon. One of the fulfilment centers will be located in North Portland and is expected to be opened in 2018 where 1000 new job positions will be created. The two other fulfilment centers will be located in Salem and Troutdale and are also set to be opened next year. In total about 3,500 jobs will be created by Amazon in Oregon with the three new sites.

Amazon has been ramping up its distribution and warehousing presence all over the United States in a bid to cut down on shipping times and costs. In some markets such as Portland, delivery of some items can now be done in hours. Amazon’s new facility in Portland will measure 918,400 feet and the wages for the warehouse workers are expected to range between $13 and $23 per hour.
